BEFORE YOU START

How the alarm system works

Every system includes a central control panel. The panel contains the main keypad, a built-in Wi-Fi module and an internal sounder.

1. Control panelThe control panel is the hub of the alarm and communicates with the detectors and external bell.
2. DetectorsDoor contacts, PIR movement detectors and other sensors report activity back to the control panel.
3. Phone appThe built-in Wi-Fi module connects the system to an app on your phone, allowing you to set and unset the alarm remotely.
4. Alarm warningIf a protected zone is triggered while the system is set, the panel activates the appropriate alarm sounders and external bell.

The walkthrough below helps you decide which doors, rooms and areas need detectors connected to the control panel.

STEP 1 OF 4

Walk through your property and build a zone list

Use our zone-planning sheet, a sheet of paper or the notes app on your phone. Start at the front door and move around the property in one direction—clockwise is usually easiest. Number every device in order: Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3 and so on.

What is a door contact?

A small magnetic sensor fitted to the door and its frame. Opening the door while the alarm is set triggers that zone.

What is a PIR?

A passive infrared detector senses movement through changes in infrared heat. It is normally positioned in a suitable corner to cover the room's doors and windows.

  1. Zone 1—front door. Write “Front door — door contact”. If the door contains glass, has a glazed side panel, or there is a nearby hall window, also add a PIR as the next numbered zone.
  2. Enter the first room and continue clockwise. Write down the room name, then add the detector that protects it—for example, “Zone 3 — Lounge — PIR”.
  3. Check the room's doors and windows. One correctly positioned PIR will usually cover both. Large, divided or unusually shaped rooms may need extra detection.
  4. Record the doors used for entry and exit. A door contact is normally needed on each door that will be used to enter or leave while the alarm is set—for example, the main entrance or another agreed entry/exit door. You do not need to add a contact to every external door automatically.
  5. Complete the ground floor room by room. Check every downstairs room, window and door, adding a PIR or other suitable detector where protection is required.
  6. Choose the upstairs coverage that suits you. On the first floor, many customers choose one PIR on the landing to detect anyone moving between the bedrooms and stairs. Detectors in every upstairs room are optional.
  7. Protect higher-risk upstairs rooms. Add a detector to any room that can realistically be reached from a flat roof, extension, balcony or another accessible climbing point. The same principle applies to second and third floors, where full room-by-room coverage is not usually necessary unless preferred or the access risk justifies it.

Example note: Zone 1—Front door—Door contact; Zone 2—Hall—PIR; Zone 3—Lounge—PIR; Zone 4—Kitchen—PIR.

You will enter this numbered list in Step 2. Final detector positions depend on the property layout and will be confirmed during installation.
